You may have heard that the National Library for Health is changing the way it can be searched, and this new way of searching is being called ‘Search 2.0′.
It is now organising resources into a series of ‘hubs’ each one offering its own search facility tailored to the resources. So far, the hubs include:
The biggest change is to the way you can search for journal articles. The databases available remain the same (Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, AMED, PsycINFO and British Nursing Index), with HMIC incorporating DH-Data and King’s Fund, but there is now a new search interface.
This offers all of the options previously offered through the DialogDatastar interface, such as thesaurus mapping, limits, search combining and so on available through the advanced search option (provided you have logged in with your NHS Athens account). As before, a database search will also provide links to the full-text of journal articles that are available to the NHS and also tell you if the article is held in your local healthcare library.
Want to know more? Contact us and ask for a demonstration of the new features, or training on how to use them to search effectively. Both our libraries are running a series of training sessions on Search 2.0 during April, and will continue to offer training on searching databases for literature.

With the changes taking place to the National Library for Health over the last few weeks, a number of different resources are now available to support anyone with an interest in management within the NHS.
These include a new database, HMIC, that includes the DH-Data and King’s Fund databases that previously needed to be searched separately. This is available by visiting ‘Books, Journals and Healthcare Databases’ on the National Library for Health, and we recommend for best results that you use the Healthcare Databases Advanced Search (you’ll need your NHS Athens account details to log in).
HMIC covers journal articles and official publications concerning the management of health and social care services, with an emphasis on the NHS.
Allied to this are 500 journals from the EBSCO Health Business Elite collection. These include titles such as Nursing Management, Journal of Management Studies, Bioethics, Quality Management in Healthcare and many more. These will shortly be added to the My Journals database so you can check which journals are available but even better, these will be linked to a search in the healthcare databases such as HMIC through the National Library for Health, so when you do a search for say, infection control, you’ll see links direct to any articles that the NHS subscribes to, or a note to whether we hold the journal in our libraries.
In addition, the Health Management Specialist Library continues to develop, with a browsable collection of informaton on all aspects of NHS policy and management (these can also be searched). You don’t need to be a manager to find the site useful; a wide range of briefing papers is provided on key topics such as benchmarking, clinical leadership, Freedom of Information and much more, and there is a collection of Hot Topics papers, with information about current issues such as commissioning, choice of hospital, Foundation Trusts, payment by results and more. Each of these has a description of the topic, with links to related guidance, reports, press releases and so on.
Don’t forget, both our libraries hold a range of material on management, including over 40 new book titles recently purchased by the Training and Development Department covering topics such as leadership, change management and communication skills. You can view the list of new titles on the SHeLib Catalogue.

As part of the changes to National Library for Health resources, the entire collection of BMJ Journals (not just the BMJ) is now available to holders of NHS Athens accounts.
From now on access is available to all the content, including latest issues, and there is no need to register with BMJ.
The list of journals will shortly be added to the MyJournals searchable database of NHS journals, but in the meantime, you can access the journals directly from the BMJ Journals site. When asked to login, select the link for ‘Login via Athens’.
The journals available are:
More changes to the journals and databases available to the NHS are taking place over the next couple of weeks, and we’ll keep you updated.
